It can be frustrating when these purchases seem promising initially and ultimately end up falling apart after just a few wears. Understanding the reasons why your clothing is falling apart can help you avoid wasting your money and preserving clothes that you love. Here are some of the most common reasons why your clothes don't last and how to avoid it.


Improper Washing Methods

Washing your clothes with improper washing methods can significantly reduce their lifespan. Washing your clothes too often, or at the incorrect temperature setting can dramatically wear out your clothes and weaken them.

Not only can they become more brittle and faded, but they can even shrink. Often this comes from high temperatures either from your cycle temperature or using the dryer.

Ideally, you should always follow the specific care labels on your clothing. Usually, they won't mention the temperature and type of wash.  For example, some clothing should be dry cleaned while others can be washed at a low temperature and air dried.


Poor Quality

The most obvious reason why your clothing isn't standing the test of time is because it's simply made from mediocre quality materials. Fast fashion is not the best quality, and can often wear out after a few wears and washes. In an effort to save money, these fast fashion brands often use low-quality materials like thin polyester which are more prone to falling apart.

Ideally, you want natural fibers like wool and cotton, as these will be more durable. These fibers last much longer and will be more comfortable to the touch.


Not Storing Correctly

The way you store your clothing will play a significant role in how long it lasts. Cramming your clothes all into one small space without enough airflow can affect the quality of your clothing. Not to mention, clothing that is exposed to direct sunlight or hung on the wrong kind of hanger can affect its shape and durability.

Ideally, you should use padded hangers for delicate garments, and fold your knitwear to avoid any stretching. Keep your closet organized and this will be easier for storage, and also for finding what it is you're looking for. After all, there's nothing more frustrating than digging through piles of clothing unable to find the particular item that you want.

If you spend your money on clothing, then you should be willing to put in the work it takes to take care of them.
