Don’t worry. Every third woman snores during pregnancy. It will stop as soon as you give birth to your baby girl or a baby boy. In this article, we will explain snoring in pregnancy and tell you how to prevent it.
When does snoring in pregnancy start and what are the reasons for it
Here is the good news. If you have a panic attack when you hear that you would maybe snore in pregnancy, wait a second. Snoring occurs only in the period of the second trimester. This means that you won’t snore during all nine months. Another good side of it is that you can inform on the possible ways how to prevent snoring in pregnancy.
A reason of snoring in this period is in the pregnancy hormones primarily – estrogen and progesterone. As you would gain some weight over the months, fat would gather around your throat too. Fatty neck and throat are a 100% proved to produce snoring. The airflows become a bit congested. This will result in tissue vibration, which produces harsh sounds and snoring. The higher your BMI was before pregnancy, the higher are the chances of snoring while you are pregnant.
Further, estrogen and progesterone indirectly cause nasal congestion. As the blood vessels in your nose open wider, it affects the congestion. This way, as your nasal passages would be stuffy, you would breathe more through your mouth. Mouth breading is pretty likely to be a trigger to snoring, especially if combined with other factors.
After the fifth month, your stomach will begin to show off more and more. Meaning you won’t be able to sleep on your stomach and you should know the right way of sleep in pregnancy. A mother is instinctively afraid that she might hurt a baby while sleeping on her stomach, but it is not recommendable either. So, you would sleep on your side or your back. Sleeping on the side is sometimes uncomfortable when you are pregnant, so back position would be the best. As we mentioned above, back sleeping is equal to snoring.
